Ship with more than 240 passengers sank in Indonesian waters

Emergency teams and boats that were in the area were mobilized to rescue the passengers of the Virgo Transport 8, which sank in waters near Banjarmasin, Indonesia, while carrying more than 240 people.

According to information from Venezolana de Televisión, so far, the authorities report one person dead, about 110 evacuated and one seriously injured, although they warned that the number of victims could increase as search and rescue efforts continue.

According to local media, the captain established contact around 04:00 local time to report that the boat had a leak. Later, the ship began to tilt and the crew tried to drop anchor, before it finally capsized.

Dhanna Rachmad, general manager of a port in the province where the ship was heading, confirmed its sinking based on reports collected by coordination teams.

Authorities are still investigating the causes of the leak. For now, it is known that the Virgo Transport 8 was sailing in adverse weather conditions when the incident occurred.
