On April 17, 2007, the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) was created during the 1st South American Energy Summit, held in Margarita, Nueva Esparta state, Venezuela; with the objective of strengthening cooperation ties in the region.
“The presidents and senior representatives decided to name our integration effort in South America as the Union of South American Nations UNASUR, after debates, not only at this meeting, in the previous ones, and in addition to giving it that name, which from our point of view and yesterday we agreed on that it collects a concept, collects an identity, is an identifying name without a doubt, UNASUR, so let's ask for votes to God and do what we have to do and let us incorporate social currents, the conscience of our peoples into this effort, which I am sure will have great results in the coming years, precisely for the benefit of our peoples,” said Commander Hugo Chávez during the summit.
UNASUR is an international organization whose objective is to build a space for cultural, economic, social and political integration, while respecting the reality of each Nation.
The three principles of UNASUR are: peace, democracy and human rights.
Seventeen years after its creation, the Bolivarian Government maintains its commitment to integration and construction in the region under the premise of Patria Grande, promoted by the Liberator Simon Bolivar and the Supreme Commander Hugo Chávez.
