On December 2, 2000, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named the University City a World Heritage Site, being the first campus in Latin America with this category.

On March 2, 1954, Marco Pérez Jiménez partially inaugurated this venue.

The work created by the Venezuelan architect, Carlos Raúl Villanueva, located at the headquarters of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) is composed of the Central Library, the Aula Magna, the Concert Halls, the Auditorium and the Covered Plaza.

Villanueva worked in construction for 25 years, until the late 1960s due to health problems. This complex has about 2 km², forty buildings, and is one of the most important modern architecture in the region.
