The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has 66,000 people in detention, which represents the highest number of migrants detained since the creation of the agency.
According to data from the Department of Homeland Security quoted by CBS, the increase occurred after the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency. Since January, the number of people arrested has increased by 70%.
During the Republican magnate's first presidential term, ICE reached a maximum of 56,000 migrants in its detention centers. Currently, the agency's operational infrastructure has been expanded from 41,500 to 70,000 detention beds.
With the recent approval of the Government's central legislative package, ICE's reception capacity is expected to increase to 100,000 places.
According to the report, half of the detained migrants have no criminal record. They are being held for alleged violations of immigration laws.
