As part of the activities to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, authorities from both nations honored Liberator Simon Bolivar and the Precursor leader of Algerian Independence, Emir Abdelkader.
At an event led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Africa, Yuri Pimentel, and the Algerian ambassador to Venezuela, Farouk Benmokhtar, accompanied by the diplomatic corps accredited in Caracas, a floral offering was made before the sarcophagus of the Father of the Fatherland, in the National Pantheon.
Then, the diplomats honored Algerian hero Abdelkader with another wreath, before his bust unveiled on January 25, 2012, at the Liberator Forum, in the vicinity of the National Pantheon, as a symbol of fraternity between the two countries.
“This bust also symbolizes the excellence of the relations of friendship and cooperation that exist between Algeria and Venezuela, which, despite the geographical distance, are united by the sharing of essential principles and values,” said Ambassador Benmokhtar during the ceremony.
For his part, Deputy Minister Pimentel stressed that Abdelkader “placed national unity as the superior state to face the French occupation, from its first moment in 1830, standing out for his leadership, humanity and faith, which made him a national hero of Algeria”.
“Its story symbolizes resilience and the search for sovereignty, and it resonates deeply in Algerian identity, even today. In honor of his historical memory, the bust of the Algerian independence hero was inaugurated (...) as an expression of friendship between our nations,” said the Venezuelan diplomat.
Relations between Caracas and Algiers were established on March 23, 1971. Since then, they have held five joint commissions and signed 55 cooperation instruments in the cultural, energy, commercial, scientific, educational, electoral, environmental, air and maritime transport fields, among others.
