Venezuelan athletes set new records and won world places at Brígido Iriarte

This Sunday, May 17, the XXXII edition of the Brígida Iriarte Memorial took place, a fair that transcended the record books with two absolute national marks in the 100 meters and three youth seats for the universal under-20 event in Oregon, United States.

The sprinter Bryant Álamo confirmed his good form in the 100 meters, crossed the sentence line first with an astounding time of 10.09 to set a new Venezuelan ceiling.

Alamo shattered the previous national record of 10.15 held by Alexis Nieves since 2025.

Orangys Jiménez from Sucrense stopped the clock at 11.22 seconds in the qualifying series, dethroning the historic national record of seniors that the capital Andrea Purica had at 11.24 since 2018.

In the decisive phase of the race, Jiménez starred alongside Colombian Marleth Ospino in a hard-fought episode that awarded her the highest honors for an agonizing thousandth of a second (11:32.5) over Orangys herself (11:32.6), leaving the third step to Escarlet Guerra from Caracas with 11.39.

The memorial also served as a stage for the youth athletes who spectacularly sealed their performance with direct places to the U-20 World Cup in Oregon, United States.

The most emotional one was specified by Valeria Uriepero. After a short maternity break that completely separated her from high competition for the entire year 2025, the young sprinter underwent an impressive evolution process.

The third passport to North American lands was signed by Julio Chirinos in the 800 smooth meters, the Monaguense star in one of the most vibrant events in the entire national program.

Chirinos showed tactical maturity, leading the two rounds of the Caracas oval with intelligence and coolness, and crossed the finish line in an outstanding 1:49.75.

In the 400 smooth meters, the Colombian Lina Licona confirmed her supremacy by prevailing with a strong authority, stopping the clock at 51.60 seconds. Ana Torin from Zulia won a valuable silver medal with 53.80, while the last step of the podium went to Brazil's Anny De Bassi with 54.62.

In addition, on short fences, the Ecuadorian Maribel Caicedo prevailed with an overwhelming pace and technical skill over obstacles to prevail with a record of 13.33 seconds.

Finally, in the pit, Brazil confirmed its potential with Regiclecia Candido, who achieved the biggest takeoff to mark her mark at exactly 14.00 meters in the triple jump, closing with a finishing touch an amazing afternoon of pure athletics in the Venezuelan capital.
