On July 21, the National Veterinary Day is celebrated, which was determined during the First Grand Colombian Congress of Veterinary Physicians, an activity that took place from July 21 to 28, 1946, at the facilities of the Liceo Andrés Bello in Caracas (Venezuela).
This event was full of professional, trade union, academic and social proposals, so much so that during its development, the representatives of the participating countries; Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela decided to celebrate Veterinary Physician's Day on July 21 of each year. However, today, only our country continues to commemorate this day.
The functions of these professionals include the observation, interpretation and diagnosis of animal pathologies, improvement of animal performance and productive livestock, surveillance in the manufacture and distribution of food products of animal origin intended for human consumption, analyzing animal behavior, research, teaching and the defense of animal institutions and units.
In Venezuela, we have the Nevado Mission, a project that was promoted by President Nicolas Maduro, whose main objectives are to rescue and protect animals in street situations, promote the recognition of animal rights and sensitize people to living beings.
The name Nevado is in honor of the Mucuchi hero dog who accompanied the Liberator Simon Bolivar from the Admirable Campaign in 1813, to the Battle of Carabobo on June 24, 1821, where Nevado died pierced by a spear from the Spanish royalists.
