Every year on September 8, International Literacy Day is celebrated, as approved in 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in order to recognize literacy as a fundamental human right for the individual and social growth of every person.

According to UNESCO, economic development, social progress and human freedom depend on the establishment of a basic level of literacy in all countries of the world. However, in the world, literacy remains one of the great challenges that remain. But despite this, experience has shown that investment in education directly translates into better nutrition, health and economic performance for their families, their communities and their countries.

In Venezuela, Literacy Day is of great importance thanks to the work carried out by the National Government through the various social missions aimed at education. These have obtained positive results, making it possible to name our country as a Territory Free of Illiteracy on October 28, 2005, after having achieved the goal of 1,482,543 literate people thanks to the Andrés Bello educational agreement endorsed by Unesco.

In the same way, educational programs such as the Robinson Mission have allowed the Revolutionary Government to continue providing the opportunity to hundreds of Venezuelans to enter the national education system.

What makes Venezuela stand out in Latin America as one of the leaders in terms of literacy, because according to the latest figures recognized by Unesco in 2014, 95.2% of the population without any type of education has been able to become literate in less than ten years.

This is a remarkable achievement of the Bolivarian Revolution, since the social work being carried out today in the country has allowed the inclusion of everyone in the Venezuelan education system, even serving as an example for other countries in America and the world.
