(The Mandinga Papers, November 29, 2005)

  • On Saturday, November 27, 1961, Andrés Avelino Carrillo Anzola, who was carrying the sin of being the brother of a communist, was shot dead by agents of the General Directorate of Police (DIGEPOL).
  • The killers mistook him for his brother León Tomás Carrillo Anzola, president of the Student Center of the combative Liceo Fermín Toro, who was widely known for his political activity.
  • Andrés Avelino was strafed at the heights of Monte Piedad, Caracas, as he was leaving a party with friends. His body was found the next day far from the place, in the Vuelta de las Morochas, near Los Teques, on the Pan-American Highway.
  • To try to simulate a dramatic traffic accident, the officers shredded the body of their victim with the very vehicle that the young man was driving, owned by his brother.
  • Carlos Andrés Pérez was then the Minister of Internal Relations, founder of the Betancourt “Gestapo”, which he himself directed.
