The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, advocated this Wednesday, the 27th, that the world prepare to face the next pandemics and act on the experiences learned from COVID-19, reported the news agency Prensa Latina.

“Together, let's learn from the lessons learned from COVID-19 and take action based on them, prepare ourselves, and build a fairer and healthier world for all,” said Guterres.

The call was made by Guterres, on the occasion of the International Day of Preparedness for Epidemics, in which he urged to do a better job, and not to allow the hoarding of vaccines, tests and treatments by some nations.

“We must reject the moral and medical disaster of countries amassing and controlling health supplies related to pandemics and ensure that everyone has access to diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines. We must also strengthen the authority and funding of the World Health Organization,” he said.

In that regard, he recalled that last May the public health emergency of COVID-19 was declared over, which does not mean that the disease is not latent on a global scale.

“The economic damage caused by the pandemic continues. Many health systems are struggling. Millions of children are threatened by diseases after not receiving routine childhood vaccines,” he said.

To counter this, he argued that the way forward lies in global cooperation, improving global surveillance of viruses, strengthening health systems and realizing the promise of Universal Health Coverage.
