The president of the National Electric Corporation (CORPOELEC), Juan Crisóstomo Fernández, highlighted the technical capacity of Venezuelan engineers who work tirelessly to improve the National Electric System.
He asserted that in the face of a complex situation characterized by the excessive increase in demand due to the phenomenon of children and the impact on generation infrastructure due to the seismic double, a comprehensive strategic plan is being implemented to guarantee the stability and continuity of the National Electricity System (SEN).
Fernández explained that the high temperatures recorded recently caused a significant increase in energy consumption at the national level, just at a time when generation capacity was compromised.
Added to this meteorological factor was the impact of the seismic movement on the generation park. “When an earthquake occurs while a rotating machine is in full operation, the effects are immediate: some units are instantly out of service, while others remain active but with hidden damage that occurs later,” said the authority.
The head of CORPOELEC detailed the architecture of the Venezuelan energy park, which combines hydroelectric and thermal technology.
“Hydroelectric generation represents a high percentage of the country's energy matrix. It offers clean energy and, although it requires a significant initial investment, its operational maintenance costs are lower,” he explained
He also asserted that thermal generation is composed of high-temperature rotating units that require a constant flow of fuel and continuous maintenance. This segment requires the systematic replacement of original parts and spare parts.
The president of the corporation recalled that most of the equipment that makes up the SEN is of European and North American origin, with technology from manufacturers such as Siemens, General Electric and ABB.
He emphasized that CORPOELEC's workforce and engineers were directly trained by these international firms. However, he pointed out that the impossibility of accessing certain components, key parts and original spare parts from these manufacturers in recent years caused progressive deterioration in several thermal plants.
Fernández confirmed the decisive capacity of the professionals at the head of the state company: “We are engineers and we like to work in a planned manner. We have worked with resources and without them, facing historic challenges, and we have a clear and rigorous planning to get out of this contingency.”
As a demonstration of the commitment and response capacity of the workforce, Fernández highlighted the priority attention provided in the state of La Guaira after the earthquake, where the shock caused the collapse of multiple transmission towers, the fall of high voltage lines, the overturning of transformers and severe damage to battery banks.
“We deployed a multidisciplinary technical team to La Guaira. Our people worked tirelessly, day and night, and in just three days we managed to restore electricity service to the entity, overcoming a total impact,” said Fernández, reiterating that the workforce remains deployed throughout the country to consolidate the recovery of the system.
