Chile registered the 40th femicide, during 2023, after the murder last Thursday, December 28, of a 29-year-old woman by her partner, a 67-year-old man, according to local authorities, according to the Telesur website.
According to the publication, the victim died suffocated by her ex-partner after an argument. The neighbors called the authorities, but when the officers arrived, the young woman had already died.
In 2022, Chile registered 52 completed and 180 frustrated femicides; while, almost at the end of 2023, the Latin American country had 213 frustrated femicides.
Between 2020 and 2022, a total of 154 were counted. Specifically, 47 of these crimes occurred in 2020 and 55 in 2021, according to the first Statistical Report on Homicide with a Gender Perspective, prepared by the National Attorney's Office.
On the other hand, according to data provided by the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity, the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, where the capital is located, is the one with the highest number of cases.
In 2020, it was decided to commemorate the National Day against Femicide every December 19, in honor of Javiera Neira, a six-year-old girl murdered by her father.
