The seventh session of the 14th Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (permanent body of Parliament), in Beijing, voted to appoint Dong Jun as China's new defense minister.
Jun has held the position of commander-in-chief of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy since 2021. From 2017 to 2021, he served as deputy commander of the Southern Theater Command of the Southern Army, according to the Xinhua portal.
On October 24, the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress decided to remove Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu from office. By then, the general had been out of the spotlight for almost two months: the last time he appeared in public was on August 29, when he spoke at the III Forum on China-Africa Peace and Security, which hosted the capital of the Asian country.
