This Wednesday, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo confirmed a worrying escalation in the Ebola outbreak that has affected the country since May 2026, counting to date a total of 597 positive cases and 109 deaths.

This health crisis has become one of the most severe recorded in the nation in the last decade, generating growing international alarm due to the imminent risk of spread to neighboring nations in the Great Lakes region.

The emergency is mainly concentrated in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, geographical areas that present extremely complex conditions due to persistent insecurity and the active presence of armed groups.

Not only have these factors displaced entire communities, but they have also seriously hampered humanitarian efforts, making it difficult for medical brigades to access areas where the transmission of the virus is most active.

Health authorities face significant logistical challenges to curb the chain of infections, exacerbated by a worrying low rate of direct contact tracing and the reluctance of certain sectors of the local population towards intervention protocols.

This community resistance, combined with political and social instability in the region, has prevented containment measures from achieving the necessary effectiveness to stop the spread of the virus immediately.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the World Health Organization has formalized the launch of a regional response plan with an investment of 518 million dollars to strengthen surveillance, medical care and cross-border prevention systems.

This financial effort seeks to shield neighboring countries and improve operational response capacity on the ground, in order to avoid a larger public health crisis that could further destabilize the African region.
