First peace signatory assassinated in 2024 (+ Colombia)

This Monday, January 1st, Giovanny Chávez Vega became the first signatory of the peace agreement assassinated in Colombia in 2024, after being shot in the department of Cauca.

Currently, the victim was carrying out his trial in the New Mari Álvarez Reincorporation Area located in El Bordo, jurisdiction of the department of Cauca, reported the Institute for Development and Peace (INDEPAZ).

The year 2023 ended with the assassination of Favian José Chamorro Zavala, who was also a signatory of the peace agreement, accredited since May 8, 2017 by the Office of the High Commissioner for Peace and was also shot down in Chalán, Sucre, in the early morning of December 31, 2023 in the Montes de María.

With the death of Chamorro Zavala, 45 peace signatories were murdered at the hands of Colombian paramilitaries in 2023, bringing the total to 408 since the signing of the Havana Peace Accords in 2016, with Chávez now there are 409.
