Saudi Arabia joined the BRICS group as a full member this Tuesday, 02, after the Arab country's application for membership was approved last August.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia obtained full membership in the BRICS organization, among six other nations, which will strengthen its position on the world stage,” said the statement on Saudi state television, reported the Sputnik agency's website.

He explains that on August 24, 2023, during the organization's 15th Summit in South Africa, the bloc approved the Arab country's accession together with five other States starting in January 2024.

As of January 1, 2024, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ethiopia, Iran and Argentina were invited to join the group, but the latter formally declined the invitation at the end of December.

It highlights that currently, the BRICS represent 42% of the planet's population, 30% of the world's territory, 23% of global GDP and 18% of international trade.

Several countries such as Algeria, Bolivia, Indonesia, Iran, Turkey and Bangladesh are among those that also applied to join the bloc.
