- In December 1965, Hilda Hernández de Rangel, wife of the representative for Democratic Action (AD), Martín Antonio Rangel, died at her residence in El Cafetal when a package that pretended to be a gift exploded.
- Without giving way to the relevant investigations, the Government did not hesitate to look for a scapegoat and ordered relentless persecution against the PCV and MIR parties.
- The bomb, camouflaged inside a statuette of the Immaculate Virgin, detonated in the hands of the deputy's unwary wife more than 30 kilometers from parliament.
- However, the police executioner and head of Digepol, JJ González Patiño, with all the senior political leadership of AD and Copei, were quick to point out as guilty of the attack the entire senior staff of the PCV and the MIR, including peaceful intellectuals such as Eduardo Gallegos Mancera and Pedro Ortega Díaz.
- All the interrogations, investigations and experiments carried out concluded that the real suspect was the same AD deputy, Martín Antonio Rangel, who a few months after his premature widowhood married a minor.
- However, the investigations were shelved by orders of Congress. Congressman Adeco did not have his immunity breached. At five years old, after his parliamentary term expired, he was tried by a fee from the “Tribe of David”, who decided that there was no merit or sufficient evidence to charge him with the murder of his 22-year-old wife.
- Meanwhile, the Digepol thugs, led by the murderer JJ González Patiño, put a price on the heads of:
- Rafael Nery Carrillo
- Eduardo Gallegos Mancera
- Pedro Ortega Díaz
- Lino Martínez
- Ali Rodríguez Araque
- Alonso Ojeda Olaechea
- Germán Lairet
- Radamés Larrazábal
- Among others
