Nawaf al Ahmad al Sabah, after being crown prince, became the new ruling emir of Kuwait in September 2020, when his brother, Kuwaiti Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, died.
According to the Constitution of the Kuwaiti State, Sheikh Nawaf will be succeeded by his half-brother, who is currently the crown prince, Sheikh Mishaal al-Ahmed al-Sabah, 83. It is reported that the Sheikh has already taken care of most of the country's daily schedule.
The late emir began his political career at the age of 25 as governor of Hawalli province until 1978, then he was defense minister when Iraq invaded in 1990 and then took office as interior minister, for 10 years in January 2005.

The Council of Ministers announced official mourning in the country for 40 days and the closure of official departments for three days.
