Typhoon Bavi advances towards Taiwan after leaving at least 15 dead due to landslides in the Philippines

Typhoon Bavi is making strong headway towards Taiwan, where authorities have already coordinated the preventive evacuation of more than 2,000 people in the face of the threat of what could be one of the largest cyclones to hit the island in the last three decades.

The meteorological phenomenon is heading to this region after its passage through the Philippines, where heavy rains caused floods and fatal landslides, Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) detailed on its website.

According to official reports from the Philippine authorities, the rainfall aggravated by the Bavi pass generated two landslides on the island of Mindanao, leaving an unfortunate toll of at least 15 people dead and six missing. Previously, the weather system had hit Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands last Monday, claiming the category of a super typhoon; however, it lost intensity along its route and was degraded to a typhoon while moving across the Pacific Ocean.

The Central Meteorological Administration of Taiwan (CWA) explained this Friday that the system withstands winds of 155 kilometers per hour, accompanied by destructive gusts that reach 190 km/h. Although it has a strong wind diameter of up to 380 kilometers, a characteristic that would make it the largest typhoon to affect Taiwan in more than 30 years, experts predict a decline in its strength. CWA meteorologist Wang Ping-hsiang explained: “The typhoon is expected to continue weakening because environmental conditions are not favorable to it.”

According to the trajectory models, the effects of the cyclone are expected to hit between this Friday and Saturday in the north and east of Taiwan, as well as the remote islands located in the southwest of Japan. Subsequently, the system will continue its movement through the region before finally making landfall on the coast of China.
