Through the social network X, the Minister of Popular Power for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, extended his congratulations to the Venezuelan writer Esmeralda Torres, who won the International Poetry Prize City of Mérida 2023, Mexico, for her collection of poems “Moving the House”.
“Congratulations! The Venezuelan Esmeralda Torres won the International Poetry Prize in #México,” Villegas wrote on the social network this Wednesday.
In addition, according to information from the National Book Center (CEN AL), the jury, composed of writers Rubén Reyes Ramírez, from Mexico; Miriam Reyes, from Spain, and José Gregorio Vázquez, from Venezuela, unanimously decided to award the prize to the Venezuelan poet, who presented her work under the pseudonym Irene Villoro and once the plea was opened, her authorship was confirmed.
The jury highlighted that Torres's work highlights the “poetic depth and mystery” of his poems, which decipher a journey to a protected place: the house (...) their naked intensity allows the poem and the poet to change the house as their skin sheds irretrievably and out of spiritual necessity”.
The Venezuelan writer won against a total of 359 participants in the contest. In addition, the prize consists of $70,000 Mexican pesos and the publication and dissemination of the work.
