Venezuela advocates expanding African presence in the UN Security Council

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela called on Tuesday,
from New York, the United States, to expand the presence of
African countries in the Security Council of the United Nations
(UN).
This proposal is part of a comprehensive reform that seeks
to strengthen the representation of Africa in multilateral institutions with
equity, legitimacy and historical justice.
The approach was presented during the Ministerial Meeting of
the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) with the
African Union, within the framework of the 81st UN General Assembly.
The Venezuelan delegation, represented by the Deputy Minister for Africa of the Ministry
for Foreign Affairs and International Trade,
Yuri Pimentel, assured that in recent years there has been
progressive progress in the rapprochement between CELAC and the African Union. “The high-level
forums held confirm the existence of political will and
enormous possibilities to take this relationship to a new strategic level,
” he said.
He emphasized that Africa must be the protagonist of its own
development, in accordance with its priorities and aspirations, in order to build
greater convergences between the priorities of CELAC and Agenda 2063, translating them into concrete cooperation.
“It's time to consolidate our common history in
true economic integration. We promote South-South cooperation to
develop technical capacities, generate added value and strengthen the regional
productive fabric, transforming the potential of our resources into employment
and market opportunities,” he said
The Deputy Minister for Africa, on behalf of President
Delcy Rodríguez, thanked the countries of the African continent for the
solidarity received after the earthquakes that affected their nation on
June 24 and assured that today Venezuela is reborn; and that rebirth means not only
rebuilding what was lost, but correcting vulnerabilities, strengthening capacities
and transforming recovery into new opportunities for development and cooperation.
