The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that dengue fever has become a health threat after infecting more than 5 million people worldwide, of whom 5 thousand have died this year.

“Although 4 billion people are at risk of contracting dengue fever, most of those infected have no symptoms and usually recover in a week or two,” said Diana Rojas Álvarez, leader of the WHO arbovirus team during the weekly UN briefing in Geneva this Friday.

In this regard, he explained that 80% of cases have been reported in America, followed by Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific.

According to what was published on the TELESUR web portal, the WHO warned that a new outbreak required a higher level of attention and control from the agency to help countries control and prepare for the next season of the disease.
