On August 6, 1824, the Battle of Junín was fought, in which patriots under the command of the Liberator Simon Bolivar faced the royalists, sealing victory in the central Peruvian mountain range, more than 4,000 meters above sea level.

The confrontation lasted almost an hour, and the number of realistic casualties was around 364 and a hundred prisoners. In the ranks of the Liberator, the toll was 45 deaths and nearly 10 injured.

“The campaign that should complete your freedom has begun under the most favorable auspices. General Canterac's army received a mortal blow in Junín, having lost, as a result of this event, a third of its forces and all its morale. The Spaniards flee in fear, leaving the most fertile provinces... Soon we will visit the cradle of the Peruvian Empire and the Temple of the Sun. On the first day of its freedom, Cuzco will have more pleasure and more glory than under the golden kingdom of its Incas,” said the Liberator after the battle.

With the victory of Junín, an important step was achieved for the Battle of Ayacucho, which sealed Peru's independence.
