The general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello Rondón, said that the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence was approved with the objective of strengthening reconciliation and unity in the country.

He noted that the legal instrument seeks to open spaces for political understanding and called on those who received benefits to assume a moral commitment to the country.

“Hopefully those who have benefited feel really committed to that law and will do real politics on the street with the people,” he said during the PSUV press conference.

Cabello stressed that the balance of law enforcement demonstrates progress in democratic coexistence. He recalled that the scope of the instrument is delimited in time and in names, and reiterated that it does not cover serious crimes or future events. “It never protects crimes to come. There is no protection for rape, murder or drug trafficking. It has a clear framework,” he said.

Regarding the return of people who alleged persecution, Cabello noted that several of them entered the country without restrictions and then left the country again. “Many came back and went again. Where is Lester Toledo? To name you one,” he said. He added that some of those who returned are linked to acts of corruption and the promotion of violent groups. “Persecuted nothing, a lie,” he said.

Cabello reiterated that the PSUV supported the Amnesty Law since its presentation in the National Assembly. “The Party gave full support, and comrade Jorge Arreaza was there from the start,” he said.
