The Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs,
Yván Gil, participated this Monday in a meeting with the Group of Friends in Defense
of the Charter of the United Nations (UN), in Geneva, Switzerland,
where he warned that the world is threatened by the outbreak of an unprecedented war.
In his speech, the Venezuelan foreign minister stressed that it is
a “miracle that today missiles and even nuclear warheads are not flying
between continents as a result of non-compliance with international law.”
“The threat is real, it's imminent, it's palpable, it's still
there, as are the actors and factors that seem to push some
political and world leaders in that direction,” he said, referring to
the importance of the Group of Friends for the promotion and defense of
the UN Charter, as a guarantor of global peace and stability.
He warned that the multilateral system and its entire regulatory
institutional architecture are under attack. “The Charter of the United Nations
is under constant fire on the part of those who today, 80 years later, consider it
a hindrance to their hegemonic plans. Let's not forget that the military aggression
against Venezuela last January was also against the coordinator of the
Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter,” he criticized.
Gil pointed out that, despite the grim scenario,
there are also “opportunities for hope and also for rethinking our individual and collective
role in favor of the cause of peoples, of life and of peace; and
the group of Friends is one of those opportunities”
The meeting took place within the framework of the 61st
regular session of the Human Rights Council of the
United Nations Organization.
