During an event with the ancestral communities in the mountain of Sorte, Yaracuy, for the 534 years of Indigenous Resistance, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Gabriela Simoza, stressed that October 12 invites us to return to our origins as well as to accompany with faith the resistance of the peoples who are united for the national development of all of Venezuela.

“By the way, already in these 534 years of indigenous resistance, we return to our roots, we return to our origins to continue accompanying that faith, that resistance to the people who unite in favor of this country,” said the vice-minister.

In ancient practice, in this sacred space, visitors came together to ask for peace, prosperity and national rebirth. The purpose of the meeting was to connect the faith of citizens with the country's historical memory.

In 2002, Commander Hugo Chávez made it official that October 12 was neither Race Day nor the Day of the Discovery of America, but rather vindicated indigenous peoples and African peoples, giving it the name in accordance with the events that occurred, such as the Day of Indigenous Resistance.

This day shows that the Day of Indigenous Resistance has become an active space to make visible the rights and memory of the original communities, and it also highlights the collective need to build stories based on the historical truth of the nation, the recognition of ancestral sacrifice and respect for diversity.
