The National Seismological Center of the University of Chile confirmed a magnitude 6.3 earthquake with an epicenter southwest of Huasco, in the Atacama region.
The earthquake had a depth of 26 kilometers and was felt in Atacama, Coquimbo, Valparaiso and in the metropolitan area, he said.
Chilean media reported that the earthquake lasted about 50 seconds and that the initial data were corrected by the Seismological Center, which also recorded subsequent seismic activity in the same area. According to BioBioChile, “there has been no damage to people or infrastructure”, according to the first official balance sheets.
The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service activated the verification protocol to rule out injuries, service interruptions and damage to communication routes.
Other reports indicated that the earthquake was also felt in some areas of western Argentina, according to information released by Altador, which located the hypocenter 27 kilometers deep and specified the coordinates of the epicenter.
The National Seismological Center also recorded several secondary tremors in the following hours, with quantities between 2.8 and 4.0 in areas near Huasco, Ollagüe and Camiña, according to data published on its platform.
The authorities are continuing with the technical evaluation and are keeping official channels active to update information.
