The epidemic declared last May 15 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) exceeded 9,000 confirmed cases and accounts for 4,381 deaths, with a fatality rate of 48.3%, according to the African country's Ministry of Health on Tuesday.
In detailing the progress of the outbreak during the last day, the Congolese health authorities specified that “88 new infections were confirmed in the last 24 hours”, with the greatest impact concentrated in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu with 56 and 28 recent cases, respectively.
With regard to biological response measures and international cooperation against the spread of the virus, public health agencies explained that the Bundibugyo variant lacks specific treatments, so the World Health Organization is progressing with tests of two vaccines in phase 1 while the local government applies doses of Ervebo in areas of greatest risk.
The epidemiological crisis, which already records related cases in Uganda, Kenya, France and the Netherlands, highlights the serious funding and infrastructure gaps affecting countries of the Global South in the face of large scale health emergencies.
