The Constitutional Court (CC) of Ecuador ruled in favor of the official proposal to hold a consultation that would allow citizens to decide whether or not they agree to the drafting of a new Constitution, in an action criticized by the opposition that called the decision “deplorable”.
The CC indicated that the favorable ruling occurred after the Presidency corrected a series of comments made with regard to the recitals and the statute, which establishes the mechanism for the election, installation and operation of the Constituent Assembly.
In addition, the body ordered that the National Electoral Council (CNE) include the approved question on the ballot on November 16, as well as the statute and the distribution table of the parliamentarians who would make up the Constituent Assembly, which would be responsible for drafting a new Magna Carta.
