The Governor of Táchira, Freddy Bernal, called for avoiding border transfers following Colombia's decision to close border crossings during the second presidential round this Sunday, a measure announced by Migration Colombia to protect election day.
“We recommend avoiding transfers to the border to prevent setbacks. Let's stay calm and follow the authorities' instructions!” , said Freddy Bernal, in his X account quoted by Último Noticias.
Bernal reported that the closure at the crossings with Venezuela has been in effect since this Saturday and will continue until Monday, so he asked to take precautions to prevent people from being held at checkpoints, in addition to insisting on remaining calm and following official guidelines.
The Colombian Government ordered the closure of all its land and river borders with neighboring countries in order to guarantee a process without external interference, although in the Venezuelan case the measure was brought forward by twelve hours according to data from Migration Colombia.
The crossings located in Norte de Santander, Arauca and La Guajira were blocked by immigration officials and local authorities, while controls were reinforced to avoid risks affecting the development of the vote and possible irregular movements of voters.
Colombia will elect the next president this Sunday between Abelardo de la Espriella and Iván Cepeda, in a process accompanied by additional restrictions such as the dry law, in force from Saturday afternoon to noon on Monday to ensure public order during the day.
