Governor José Alejandro Terán: La Guaira keeps the use of its spas restricted

The use of resorts in the state of La Guaira remains restricted while the recovery of areas affected by the earthquakes of June 24 progresses, the governor of the state, José Alejandro Terán, said in statements to the media.

He also ruled out that in the short term the conditions are in place to resume tourist activity in the worst-hit areas.

“The use of spas is restricted and, I repeat, this is done in accordance with reason,” said Terán, reported the Último Noticias portal, referring to the presence of affected buildings and debris, particularly in sectors of Macuto and Caraballeda.

He considered that proposing immediate tourist activity in the devastated areas would be irrational, since work is still under way to recover the roads, services and infrastructure necessary to receive visitors.

However, he pointed out that the restriction does not mean leaving those who are economically dependent on beaches without support. In this regard, he announced that beach service providers will be incorporated into the work of conditioning and recovery of the spaces.

“We are going to take advantage of this time to generate income for them, but so that they can dedicate themselves to working on the adaptation of the beaches, so that the beaches are much better than they were before June 24,” he explained.

Terán indicated that the plan contemplates intervening the 66 resorts and beaches of the entity, in coordination with the so-called Popular Beach Power, with the purpose of improving the conditions of these spaces during the reconstruction phase.

Among the planned works, he mentioned the construction and rehabilitation of batteries for bathrooms and showers, adaptation of services, installation and improvement of awnings and other structures intended for the attention of visitors.

He also proposed that new constructions and adaptations incorporate seismic resistance criteria and comply with international standards, as part of the preventive measures that should accompany the recovery of the tourism sector.

The regional president said that the tourist reactivation will not depend only on the recovery of beaches, but also on the restoration of fundamental services such as roads, transport, hotels and other infrastructure related to the activity.

“Today in La Guaira, the conditions are not yet in place for us to be able to receive tourists outside of La Guaira,” he said.

He noted that these actions have been discussed with the president in charge of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez and the Minister of Popular Power for Tourism, Daniella Cabello, and assured that there is coordination to support workers in the sector as the entity's recovery progresses.

The strategy, as he explained, seeks to ensure that service providers maintain a source of income during this period and, simultaneously, participate in the transformation of tourist spaces.

“When we clear roads, we recover services a little more, we have completely suitable roads, well, La Guaira will be reborn with greater strength,” he said.

Before the earthquakes, the entity had an important tourist activity linked to its beaches and resorts, which during seasons of high influx registered massive occupancy. Before the earthquake event, regional authorities reported 66 beaches, resorts and rivers suitable for visitors.
