The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, inaugurated this Sunday the monument to the Grand Cacique Guaicaipura and the Chief Urquía, within the framework of the Day of Indigenous Resistance and the Decolonization of America.
From the Gran Cacique Guaicaipura highway, in Caracas, where he received a massive march of the original peoples, the Head of State indicated that the work represents the indigenous struggle against the Spanish Empire.
“Guaicaipura holds in his hand an imperial Spanish sword, which he snatched a general from the imperial army after a victorious battle and broke the sword as a symbol of Indian victory. In his right hand, Guaicaipura has a combat sledgehammer with which he burst his head and burst the teeth of the Spanish Empire,” he described.
He pointed out that “the great cacica Urquía, our mother, has raised in her right hand the red plume that signifies the Grand Cacique Guaicaipura, chief of chiefs”.
“We are doing justice and I feel happy. Because if the genocidal and colonialist legacy of Christopher Columbus and what the European conquest meant are rescued in the supremacist North, we in justice rescue the independence, rebel and resistance legacy of the Indo-American peoples,” he said.
