The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejected the statements issued by the Prime Minister of Guyana regarding a possible decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the territorial dispute over Guiana Essequiba.
Through a statement shared by the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Yván Gil, on his Telegram channel, the Venezuelan Government reiterated that it has never given its consent to submit the dispute to the jurisdiction of that body and maintained that the lawsuit filed by Guyana constitutes a violation of the Geneva Agreement of 1966.
The text also questions whether the Guyanese authorities give in advance the content of a future Court ruling, considering that this position shows a disregard for international law and reinforces Venezuela's doubts about the ongoing process.
For this reason, Venezuela ratified that it will not recognize any decision that the ICJ may issue on Guiana Essequiba and reaffirmed that it will continue to promote a political and negotiated solution to the border dispute, in accordance with the Geneva Agreement as the only valid mechanism to reach a mutually acceptable settlement between the two nations.
