The Single Health Authority in the state of Anzoátegui, Roberto Rojas, assured that from the moment the cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (SPH) were detected, Environmental Health and Vector Control teams were deployed in the area to mitigate and prevent the spread.
In addition, he explained that this virus is transmitted by rodents in rural and agricultural areas, “mainly when they inhale particles of urine, faeces or saliva in closed spaces, and that so far there is no scientific evidence of person-to-person transmission in our country.”
In addition, he ruled out any generalized risk in the population as a result of the event that occurred in the town of Boca del Pao, in the southern part of the state, and emphasized that no new suspected cases have been reported; at the same time, he indicated that intense chlorine-based disinfection measures and days of deratization are being carried out.
Finally, he called for preventive measures to be maintained and to be alert to symptoms, “the virus can look like any febrile event, accompanied by other indicators such as vomiting and liquid stools.”
