Jennifer Geerlings-Simons takes office as Suriname's first president

This Wednesday, at the Anthony Nesty Sports Center, located in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, the inauguration of the president of that nation, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, accompanied by the people and the international delegations of the diplomatic corps accredited in that country, took office. The Executive Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, is present at the event.
In his speech, Geerlings-Simons said: “I take on a task that will demand everything from me. I also know that being the first woman to hold this position in Suriname will come with additional pressure.”
“We are starting to work for the country's growth. I am sure that with the support of all sectors, we can establish the foundations for the development of our people, the educational and agrarian sector,” said the president
Likewise, in her speech as head of state, she added that “if we have the participation of all Surinemese people inside and outside. The government is going to set up new programs, we must support each other as brothers.”
Last Sunday, July 6, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons became the first female president of Suriname, six weeks after her party won the elections and formed a coalition with other political groups, according to international media.
The National Assembly elected the 71-year-old leader and leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), and her running mate, Gregory Rusland, of the National Party of Suriname (NPS), for the vice-presidency.
