On July 11, 1776, the painter of the heroes, Juan Lovera, was born, a remarkable artist who, with his brush, captured the most historic events of our country, such as the paintings of April 19, 1810 and that of July 5, 1811, in both pieces, he portrayed each of the emblematic characters who intervened in these independence events.
This famous man from Caracas was not only the graphic chronicler of such solemn days, but he was also an excellent painter of high quality plastic, the initiator in our country of genre painting that would gain a prominent place with the work of Tovar and Tovar.
His initial interests were religious subjects, influenced by his first studies in the workshops of the master Juan Landaeta, Lovera became involved in the emancipatory movement, convinced that history should be preserved for subsequent generations, he broke with the colonial tradition of aristocratic portraiture to enter into the historical theme. His paintings have the virtue of strengthening his conception of art, almost photographic, by his way of expressing events.
In 1814, Lovera joined the patriotic ranks to accompany Simón Bolívar to the east of the country, after the fall of Boves. Then thirteen years later, his hand also captured the portraits of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, José Antonio Páez, Cristóbal Mendoza and José María Vargas.
