MINCYT and IAEA mobile X-ray equipment at the Dr. José María Vargas Regional General Hospital in La Guaira

The Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology (MINCYT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) delivered mobile X-ray equipment to the Dr. José María Vargas Regional General Hospital in the state of La Guaira.

The facility is part of the response to the effects of the double earthquake of June 24 and seeks to reinforce general radiology care at the health center.

The equipment was received and installed under the Technical Cooperation project INT0103, carried out through the National Liaison Office to the IAEA. With this device, the hospital will treat patients in the coastal emergency and outpatient services free of charge.

“Part of the vital elements for the proper functioning of this equipment are good practices and radiation protection, ensuring the safety of both the technical personnel responsible for operating it and the patients,” said the head of the Communications Electronics Unit of the National Center for Development and Research in Telecommunications (CENDIT), Carlelinés Gavidia.

In parallel, the specialist Joise Salas offered a conference on the correct use and electromedical maintenance of the device and the engineer Yaneime Umbría gave an update on radiation protection aimed at occupationally exposed personnel.

During the training, the three pillars of radiation safety were addressed: justification, optimization under the Alara criterion and dose limitation. The operation of ionizing radiation in medicine and its diagnostic application under safety protocols were also explained.
