The Ministry of Popular Power for Culture commemorated this Thursday the 50th anniversary of the tragedy of the University Orfeón of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), which occurred on September 3, 1976 on Terceira Island, archipelago of the Azores, Portugal.
The plane crash claimed the lives of 52
members of the choir group, its director Vinicio Adames, 11 military crew members and five companions
. The orfeón was traveling to Spain to represent
Venezuela at the 12th Barcelona International Choral Singing Festival.
Despite the tragedy, the Orfeón
Universitario resumed its activities six months later, on March 27,
1977, with a presentation in the Aula Magna of the UCV under the direction of
Maestro Raúl Delgado Estévez. In 1983, the group was declared
Artistic Heritage of the Nation.
Half a century after that tragic
September 3rd, Venezuela pays tribute to those who were worthy ambassadors of our identity.
In the Eastern Cemetery, in Caracas, there is a monument
dedicated to the victims, whose repatriated remains rest in that cemetery.
Today, the life, dedication and talent of these orpheonists and their companions are honored. His legacy continues to vibrate in every performance of those who, following in his footsteps, keep alive the song of the UCV and the pride of music throughout the country.
