The Fifth National Preparatory Investigation Court of Peru ordered former President Martín Vizcarra to be prevented from leaving the country for 12 months for a case of alleged bribes received when he was governor of the Moquegua region (2011-2014), according to the resolution published last Thursday, January 4.

In this regard, according to information from Telesur, the judge in charge of the proceedings, Margarita Salcedo, declared partial support for a request from the provincial prosecutor of the Third Office of the Supraprovincial Specialized Corporate Prosecutor's Office, which specializes in corruption crimes committed by public officials, requesting a travel ban against Vizcarra for 18 months.

For this reason, he decided to apply the limitation only for 12 months and ordered to give notice to the appropriate authorities to comply with the provisions of the order. In addition, he justified the measure by citing the constitutional right to discover the truth, guarantee the purpose of the process and avoid the risk of the defendant fleeing.

For his part, prosecutor Osías Castañeda stated in a hearing held on December 28 that the procedural danger of former President Vizcarra has increased because he has tried to travel for political reasons to different locations in the country, despite having been banned from holding any public office.

It is important to note that this right wing, who promoted violence against Venezuela and xenophobia against our compatriots, is under investigation for alleged bribes received for the Lomas de Ilo works and the Moquegua hospital while he was governor of that southern state.

In addition, he faces a tax request for 15 years in prison for allegedly having received 2.3 million soles, about 620,000 dollars, in bribes from companies that were awarded infrastructure works in his region when he was governor, before becoming president.

He has also been banned from holding public office by Congress for ten years for the “vaccinagate” case, referring to irregular vaccination against Covid-19 in 2020, and for another five years for alleged illegal links with companies when he was Minister of Transport and Communications in the government of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
