During the event
for Venezuelan Student Day, the president of the Venezuelan Federation of University Students (FVEU), Ariana
Llanos, highlighted that today
Venezuelan education is becoming a reference in Latin America and the world, because it is not
only free and public, but it is also a right contemplated in the Constitution.
“In Venezuela, students no longer
debate whether or not we can enter the university; today the debate is how to
organize ourselves to defend the Homeland, study and strengthen the
country's development,” he said while offering an overview of the National
Student Congress, which brought together international delegations from Argentina, Colombia,
Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Bolivia and Mexico.
He also highlighted that today the FVEU celebrates
10 years of its creation and that it recently renewed its state coordination,
made up of leaders with an average of 23 years of age.
He stressed that in the first phase of the
congress, the new challenges of the student movement were discussed, so
he specified that the priority at this time is to raise educational quality. Our
students are asking for better laboratories, decent university spaces and the constant
presence of teachers; that is today a priority demand,” he said.
In the same way, he indicated that proposals were submitted in the legislative sphere, noting that they
proposed the revision of the university legal
framework and the updating of the Law on Universities within the framework of
the constituent process. In turn, he indicated that they also proposed strengthening
the internship and community service system.
In terms of scholarships, he noted that they proposed
consolidating a system that prioritizes academic performance, research and
the work of trainers. In addition, he added that they proposed to reactivate the scientific
Olympics in the areas of health, engineering, education, science and safety.
In the social and recreational dimension, he noted
that they requested to reactivate the University Games and strengthen tourism, recreation and culture programs
through the Great Venezuela Viva Mission.
As well as, he added that, in order to strengthen the Community environment, they proposed to hold
a Popular University Consultation, which makes it possible to define
investment priorities to improve campus conditions.
Politically, he said that the FVEU
presented a plan to give continuity to joint work with the
Bolivarian Student Organization (OBE) and proposed a
high-level technical training program for young leaders completing their university careers. In addition,
he announced the formation of student peace brigades as part of the Comprehensive
Training Plan for National Sovereignty.
“We are a conscious youth, who understand the aggressions that Venezuela has faced for more than 25 years. Our commitment is to defend peace. We cannot choose between winning or dying; it is necessary to win,” he said, handing over to President Nicolás Maduro the document containing the proposals and the balance sheet of the student electoral process.
