Caused by gunshots fired by President Carlos Andrés Pérez's bodyguards
(The New Country, October 13, 1992)
- On Monday, October 12, 1992, in the framework of the 500th anniversary of the Discovery of America, Carlos Andrés Pérez's escorts, while he was inaugurating a hospital, carried out a massacre that evoked the genocide begun by the Spanish conquest on October 12, 1492.
- Journalists and cameramen who witnessed the massacre assured that the vehicle of those who were shot down posed no danger, since it was stopped when the Presidential Guard strafed it.
- Pérez considered it “a regrettable drunken event” that occurred during the inauguration of the Binansional Hospital of Paraguaipoa, edo. Zulia; according to her textual words.
- According to the then Minister of Internal Relations, Luis Piñerúa Ordaz, President Carlos Andrés Pérez had already left the crime scene when the escorts of his Presidential Guard strafed the truck, killing the driver and two passengers.
- However, two days later, Pérez himself contradicted his minister's official version, stating that he was present at the scene when the massacre occurred.
- He also stated that the massacre was justified because the gunned down driver violated land traffic regulations.
- Two other people were also hit by presidential bullets, including a nurse from the recently inaugurated Binational Hospital of Paraguaipoa.
- The “accident”, as Piñerua Ordaz himself described it, caused three deaths and seven children shot to death.
- The government did not give the names of the officials who killed and wounded citizens.
- The news of this massacre went around the world in the distorted version of an alleged attack that was later described as an “accident”.
- El País de España reported: “It was simply an accident caused by a drunk driver out of the joy of the 5th Centenary holiday.”
- In other words, the Wayúu Indians massacred by Pérez's escorts were well massacred, because they were drunk with joy for the favors received during the celebration of 500 years of looting and genocide.
- United Press, like all international agencies, publicized the events as “an attack against President Pérez”.
