More than 54,000 teachers in the country are currently studying at the Samuel Robinson National Experimental Teaching University to continue reducing the deficit of specialized teachers in the country, said Education Minister Héctor Rodríguez.
During a visit to the Padre Mendoza National Basic School, in the El Valle parish of Caracas, Rodríguez explained that thanks to the training and incentive program, the deficit of specialized teachers in the country was reduced from 60,000 to 12,000.
In this regard, he stressed that teachers who are enrolled in this training plan receive a cash grant “because they work and train at the same time, that is, they have more responsibility, and that is a way to improve their income”.
“They tell me that here in Caracas several teachers have already entered the training process and are receiving their scholarships. So we're going to continue to incorporate every quarter. This is not mandatory, it is for those teachers who want to train and who wants to specialize,” he said.
In addition, the also sectoral vice-president for Social and Territorial Socialism explained that the lack of specialists is due to “a structural problem” inherited from a policy of the 80s that prohibited comprehensive teachers from teaching a specific subject, while universities did not train enough specialists.
“That's why there's always a problem where there's no Mathematics teacher, no Chemistry teacher, no Biology teacher, English teacher, and so on, and we're solving that,” he remarked.
Last September, the Universidad del Magisterio installed a permanent training process that will last throughout the school year “to provide pedagogical resources and support to teachers”.
