Venezuela has 408 Areas Under the Special Administration Regime

Venezuela has a total of 408 Areas Under the Special Management Regime (ABRAE), of which 99 are located in coastal areas, and 31 in protected and preserved coastal marine areas, said the director of Coastal Zones, Dorismar Rodríguez.

During an interview with Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), he specified that 227 beaches were designated for recreational and tourist purposes, while another 167 were established as nesting spots for turtles.

When referring to protection policies, he pointed to the inventory of the territorialization of sandy beaches, through which members of institutions, fishing populations and service providers are trained to carry out continuous monitoring of a beach and verify if it suffered loss or gain in its extension. These operations are carried out with the support of 15 coastal zone committees.

He also pointed out that the load capacity calculation is carried out, with which the entire area of a beach is visualized, and the parts that are service, leisure and the submerged part of the water are selected.

“From there, the range of visits for those areas is determined; and if the volume of people on a beach is exceeded, environmental authorities proceed to close it and send new visitors to other cays,” he said.

Rodríguez highlighted the importance of making the population aware of the ecological value of marine spaces in the national territory.
