The Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Félix Plasencia, reported that Venezuela notified the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, of its decision to withdraw permanently from the International Criminal Court ( ICC).

“On instructions from the President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela informed the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, of its firm and irrevocable decision to denounce the Rome Statute and begin its definitive withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), in accordance with Article 127,” he said in his account on the social network X.

He also noted that the Venezuelan State believes that the actions of the ICC respond to a geographical bias that has disproportionately concentrated its actions in countries in Africa and Latin America, to the detriment of the Global South.

In addition, he argued that this pattern evidences an uneven application of international justice and affirmed that the institution has been used to ignore sovereignty and the right of peoples to self-determination.

For this reason, he reaffirmed that Venezuela rejects “this dimension of lawfare, which perpetuates the persecution against the Venezuelan people and aggravates the inequalities that international justice should correct. We reiterate our commitment to genuinely equitable justice, respectful of the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples.”
