The sprinter Javier Gómez raised the bar in the 400 meters after recording a new national record in the distance of 44.58 on Wednesday, September 2, during the Serbian Grand Prix, which expands his aspirations in view of upcoming international commitments.
In one of the most traditional events in the Central European country, the Aragüeño caught the spotlight by commanding the final round of the race and dropping for the second time after 45 seconds, the only runner who has achieved it in the history of national athletics.
A bronze medal at the recent Central American Games, Gómez also took the opportunity to take revenge on the Dominican Gabriel Moronta, who won the title in Santo Domingo, but who this time fell behind to second place in the prestigious European athletics meeting.
From street number seven, the Venezuelan implemented a successful strategy to glory, keeping the second position, just two lengths away, behind the Australian Reece Holder, who led the course in the first 300 meters.
After the last hectometre, the Venezuelan and Moronta cut the gap with respect to the leader whom they surpassed in the final 50 meters, dividing the first two positions with Gómez in first place with a dazzling record of 44.58, the new national record, and 10 hundredths later the Dominican with 44.68.
The sensational Venezuelan brand raises expectations with a view to his participation in the upcoming 2026 South American Games, where he will meet the four-hundredth Argentine Olympic player Elián Larregina with the best record of the year (45.41), and the Brazilians Matheus de Lima (44.90) and his compatriot Kelvis Padrino (45.30).
The next challenge for Gómez in Santa Fe, Argentina, is scheduled for September 22 to 25, when the days of athletics are celebrated on the track of the High Performance Center.
