The queen of triple jumping, the Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas, returns to an indoor world championship with the same ambition and strength as always to win another gold medal in Torun Poland, in the event that will be held from March 20 to 22 next.
“I'm excited to get back on track and show what I've worked on. Beyond that, I want to enjoy and continue to set an example of improvement, perseverance and a lot of discipline,” said the triple indoor world champion in a video conference reviewed by MinDeportes.
Bronze in Tokyo
Away from the jumping pit for a year and a half due to the rupture of the Achilles tendon in her left leg, Yulimar returned to action in September 2025 with a bronze medal in the Tokyo Outdoor World Cup, where she set a record of 14.76 meters, below the Olympic record she achieved on this same stage with a flight of 15.41 m, but which was the first step in fully recovering her conditions.
“I am happy to face yet another championship, a very special one since it is my return to the indoor world championships,” said Yulimar, who won indoor events at the Portland 2016 (14.41), Birmingham 2018 (14.63) and Belgrade 2022 championships, where he set the world record of 15.74 m.
After four years and after missing the indoor edition of Nankin, China 2025, in which she ceded the triple jump throne to the Cuban Leyanis Pérez (14.93), the Caracas woman raised in Anzoátegui is physically and mentally prepared to regain supremacy in the jumping pit.
“In this long time of recovery, I forged a stronger spirit of victory. It is an important challenge to be in Torun and I have waited a long time for this. I can't wait to come back and show what I can do in the competition,” said the holder of four outdoor titles at the events in London 2017 (14.91), Doha 2019 (15.37), Eugene 2022 (15.47 m) and Budapest 2023 (15.08 m).
Complicated stage
After overcoming his Achilles tendon injury, Yulimar has led his career without so much pressure and this year he reserved his energies by appearing only at the Meeting in Valencia, Spain, on February 14, where he once again offered a great demonstration of his power, winning the race with the best record of the year in the triple of 14.95 meters.
“It wasn't finished. I went through a very difficult phase in my life due to the injury, but I am still the ambitious Yulimar Rojas who, regardless of the circumstances, always comes to the surface to prove what these legs are worth,” she reflected.
15-meter girl
At the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, she managed to gain a foothold in the 15 meters with a jump of 15.11 that gave her the title and since then she became the triple player who managed to overcome this distance the most times in history. In Poland, one of her objectives is to return to the “15-meter girl” again, as she called herself in the Peruvian capital.
“I want to regain regularity in the fifteen meters, because a torn Achilles tendon didn't slow me down, it propelled me back on. At the Tokyo World Cup last year I was left with the thorn in the gold medal, but now I'm better prepared,” he revealed.
Revenge in Torun
In Torun, she will have the opportunity to take revenge on the Cuban Leyanis Pérez and the Dominican Thea Laford, gold and silver respectively in the Japanese capital, who relegated her to third place from where she wants to rise to the top of the podium.
“I knew that in Tokyo I would have a second chance and a rematch for what happened to me. The year of transition due to the injury is over and the year is beginning with the fruits of effort and hard work. This motivates me,” said Yulimar, who has also had the support of his coach and family to get ahead.
Full support
Her mentor, Iván Pedroso, the former Cuban world and Olympic long jump champion, is still her coach and main motivator to strengthen her body and mind, her family and a country that loves her and idolizes her are, as always, encouraging her to fly as far as possible on any international stage.
“I have on my side the best psychologist in Pedroso, I have my family, a lot of people who love me, and the motivation of my country to get out of the injury and go back to being the usual Yulimar. I am physically and mentally stronger. I am a Yulimar reborn from the ashes, who emerges from the bottom, full of fire and power,” she said.
