On March 12, 1806, Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda raised the Venezuelan flag for the first time from the ship the Leander in the marina of Jacmel, Haiti.
“He raised the flag on the boat but it wasn't here in Venezuela, it was there in Haiti where he was before he came here and he fired twenty-odd cannon shots and he also took an oath of office to the officers and troops and they toasted the freedom of South America and toasted for free Colombia, he already had the idea of Colombia in 1806,” said Commander Hugo Chávez on March 12, 2004 in Caracas.
With the Miranda Liberation Expedition, a revolutionary wave began, a vision of integration of equality and patriotism.
“I swear to be faithful to the free people of South America, independent of Spain, and to serve them honestly and loyally against their enemies and opponents and to observe and obey the orders of the supreme government of this legally constituted country and the orders of the general and officers superior to me,” Miranda said at the time.
