On August 23, 1972, Isla de Aves was declared a Wildlife Refuge, by Decree No. 1069, a decree in turn published in Official Gazette No. 29888, dated August 24, 1972.

The island covers 4.5 hectares and provides Venezuela with 200 nautical miles of Exclusive Economic Zone in the Caribbean Sea.

It is composed of white sand, with little vegetation and surrounded by a coral barrier. It is the area with the greatest preponderance for the reproduction of the green turtle, whose scientific name is Chelonia mydas.

Isla de Aves is not only a tropical paradise in the center of the Caribbean Sea and an area of great strategic importance for Venezuela, but also one of the most important Wildlife Reserves in the entire middle of the American continent.
