The deputy of the National Assembly (AN), Yurami Quintero, reported that the public consultation process of the bill for the Decent Treatment of Companion Animals was extended until May 1st.

In the Coffee in the Morning program, broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión, he explained that this extension was agreed, since “we are in the final stage of the consultation until May 1, so that people who have not yet submitted their proposals can send them to us.”

He specified that the proposals can be presented at community meetings, “it is important to link with protectionist movements and with the Nevado Mission who have led the debate in the country.” Individuals who wish to submit individual proposals can do so on the Nevado Mission website.

He explained that from May 02 to 5, there will be closures by state, of these days “we are going to receive 24 proposals, one per state”, which will be presented to the Permanent Commission for Integral Social Development and then, the bill will be taken to the plenary of the Legislative Branch.

Referring to the public consultation held this year, he indicated that the receptivity is extraordinary, “we have been deployed throughout the national territory.”

In this regard, he noted that a thousand activities have been carried out, with the participation of 15,000 people, including veterinary doctors, animal defense lawyers, 207 foundations, civil associations and universities. “Eight thousand proposals have been submitted,” he said.

“In most homes, there is an animal that is part of the family, whether a dog or a cat, and the fundamental thing about this Act is that it is in the national interest,” he said.

He also stated that “what they ask of us most is the issue of sanctions, it is not incorporated in the bill, one of the contributions is to bring it to the Assembly, with its sanctions”.

On that point, he explained that they work with the Attorney General's Office, to organize what this sanctioning chapter is like, but “somehow justice must be done, for these animals that are often mistreated.”
