More than five years after the death of Diego Armando Maradona, San Isidro Criminal Court No. 7 began a new trial on Tuesday to determine the criminal responsibilities of seven health professionals.

This process starts from scratch after the annulment of the previous debate, which was invalidated by the participation of a judge in a documentary. Under the accusation of “simple homicide with possible intent”, the prosecution maintains that the Argentine star was the victim of prolonged and avoidable medical helplessness during his house stay in Tigre.

During the opening day, the complainant lawyer Fernando Burlando described medical care as “reckless” and assured that Maradona wasmurdered in an environment lacking the necessary basic equipment. The accusation focuses on key figures such as neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, pointing out that between November 11 and 25, 2020, there was no adequate cardiac monitoring despite the patient's obvious state of puffiness.

The judicial debate, led by judges Alberto Gaig, Alberto Ortolani and Pablo Rolón, is projected to be an extensive process that will involve the testimony of nearly 90 witnesses in biweekly hearings. The core of the investigation will seek to clarify whether the medical team committed deliberate omissions that determined the fatal outcome or if, on the contrary, they met legal standards.
